Singapore Idol or Singapore Idiot?

I just happened to catch the encore telecast of the first episode of Singapore Idol last night. In its 2nd year of broadcast here in Singapore. I've been reading alot about the Singapore Idol contestants in the newspaper since it first started the new season. I must say, what is wrong with you Singaporeans? So many of you, who so obviously cannot even hold a single note in tune, are trying to be the next Singapore Idol. Seriously, to those who cannot sing, have you ever tried hearing yourself sing? Can you honestly say that you can sing. Lets not say sing well but can you even sing in tune? You can't. 70% of those horrible singers they showed on tv cannot even get a bloody note right. Some of them cannot even pronounce the words correctly, let alone remember the lyrics to the songs. I understand that many of you have ambitions to be the next Singapore Idol. You want fame, money and "Idol" status. I don't fault you for that but maybe you really should try something else. Singing is just not for you. I really feel sorry for the judges. They have to put up with so much nonsense while doing the auditions. If I was one of the judges, I'll very likely punch someone in the face when they come in ranting and raving on how good they are and how they are going to be the next Singapore Idol and they sing like a cat being strangled. Why can't some people just accept the fact that they cannot sing. Look at some of the people who returned after last year's rejection. They were either the same as last year, or even worse. These people should stop trying and just stay at home. They are making a fool of themselves on national tv. I'm not saying that its not brave of them to go and try but you have to weigh the consequences too. Which will people remember more and for a longer period of time?

Singapore Idol wannabe who is brave and tries his best ---VS---
Singapore Idol reject and becomes a nation wide laughing stock?

You go figure!

Unjustifiable demands?

The General elections were just concluded last night. Even though 1.2 million of us went to vote on saturday, the outcome was quite obivious. It was a land slide victory for the PAP. I was listening to the news-presenter last night and it got me thinking. This election has been mainly about the up-grading of the lifts, building of new covered walk-ways for HDB residents and other new building projects. Its funny to think that people will only vote for you if you promise to do something for them. Promise to build new walk-ways, lifts for every floor and whatever else.

John F. Kennedy said :
Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.

Knowing this, why is it that we Singaporeans will only vote for a political party when they promise you they will do something for you? Why is it, we cannot do anything for our country and we demand that our country do so much for us. It is fair to say that the government has to look after us but we cannot hold them at ransom. Its bloody blackmail. I'm not saying that we must do something drastic for our country. We cannot change the economy or anything but I'm sure there are small things that we can do.

Take the up-grading of lifts as an example. We demand that that the government build lifts for us that stop at every floor. So, yes, the government builds these lifts for us but look what happens to them. We, who demand that the lifts be built for our convenience, can't even look after them properly. We litter in these lifts, vandalize the lifts, some even urine in the lifts. Seriously, what is wrong with all of you Singaporeans? You demand something and when they give it to you, you don't even have the decency to look after it. Its the same with the walk-ways. Litter is thrown ever where. Vandals use marker pens to scribble obscenities all over the place.

But what can we do? Singaporeans are not the most civic minded people you will ever meet in the world. I'm not saying all Singaporeans are like that. There are decent people around, just not that many. So with that, there is nothing we can do about the elections or who has won, but maybe we can try to remember that its not always what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country!

The General Election saga!

Finally, I thought this day would never come. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not really into the whole politics thingy. I had to vote as it is mandatory for all 21 year olds and above to vote. Living in Tampines, it was a contest between PAP and the SDA. In recent times the opposition parties have started to come out of their shell and actually put up a real fight for the seats in parliament. The last week or so has been really busy. Rallies were conducted in many parts of the country where PAP and the opposition were contesting for the seats. Vans carrying the PAP banners and PAP message prompting citizens to vote for the PAP has been making its rounds and vice versa for the opposition parties. I, for one, believe that Yes, we need an opposition voice in the parliament to keep track of the ruling party. However, I still don't think that the opposition parties are ready. PAP has been doing a good job for many years and its definitely not easy to take over their position and match up to everything they have achieved so far. I admit, I don't know much about politics and I actually don't care. The national pledge states that we are to "build a democratic society", but people argue that we are not a democratic country. I agree to a certain extend but like I said, I don't know much about politics so I won't make any accusations. The only thing that irritated me during the whole election saga was the James Gomez incident. What he did was wrong and I for one definitely do not believe that he was distracted and forgot to submit his form. However, it was very irritating to read in the papers and listen to the news everyday about how the PAP is using this to make a point. So the guys did a stupid thing and thought he could get away with it, he made a public apology, lets get on with life. Lets move on to more important things. Why does every minister or contesting candidates keep bringing up the James Gomez incident and keep demanding him to apologize, tell the truth and whatever. James Gomez is definitely already feeling extremely embarrassed about the whole thing. Why can't everyone act like grown ups and move on. Why keep harping on the same thing like a bunch of sec school girls! Oh well, guess that's just the Singaporeans mentality!
